Work conditions in the United States have improved considerably since 1913, when the Bureau of Labor Statistics conducted the first national survey of workplace fatalities. At that time, nearly 23,000 industrial deaths occurred in a workforce of 38million. Since then, the workforce has more than tripled, but workplace fatalities have decreased significantly, from 61 per 100,000 in 1913 to 4 per 100,000 in 2019.
